One of the state's oldest communities, McAlester grew around a trading post established in 1870 in the old Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory.

Abundant coal deposits discovered about this same time brought an influx of immigrants to work the mines.
  
After the discovery of coal and the construction of a north-south railroad, McAlester, named after J.J. McAlester, was well on its way.
  
The construction of a second railroad firmly established McAlester as the place for industry and manufacturing in the area.
